This study of the new dynamics of the Gerland district was designed as part of a participatory research approach with the Boutique des Sciences, actively involving residents' associations in defining the research areas and co-constructing a protocol appropriate to local issues.
The context of the internship
For several years now, the Gerland district in Lyon's 7th arrondissement has been undergoing a profound transformation. The successive delivery of new property developments has led to population growth and renewal. This phenomenon is changing the sociology of the district, with the arrival of new residents from a wide range of backgrounds. Faced with these changes, the Town Hall of the 7th arrondissement, in collaboration with the Science Boutique of the Université Lumière Lyon 2, has embarked on a process of analysis and understanding of the dynamics at work in order to propose appropriate public policies.
It was in this context that the Boutique des Sciences introduced an internship programme, with the aim of gathering data and adding insight into the profiles of the arrondissement's new residents.
A key moment of restitution
The public presentation of this study recently took place in front of the 15 members of the select town council. It was an occasion to share the results of the work carried out during the course. The observations highlighted trends and areas for reflection to help adapt public policies.
Towards adapted public policies
This presentation marks a key event in the project. The lessons learned from the study will enable the local authority to refine its vision of the district's social and urban dynamics and adopt public policies that are better matched to local realities.
By taking a participatory research approach, the 7th arrondissement town hall can gain a better understanding of the issues facing the district. This will enable the council to respond more effectively to the needs of residents, both old and new, and to guide future choices in terms of urban development, public services and social cohesion.
