► A political history of immigration in France : from colonial to global, and back

Bien que la France soit devenu un pays d’immigration dès le milieu du XIXe siècle, ce n’est qu’à la fin du XXe siècle que les Français ont commencé à se considérer comme vivant dans un pays d’immigration.

L’ouvrage explore ce changement d’identité et la manière dont les politiques migratoires ont redéfini la France dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle.
Organisé de façon chronologique, l’étude permet de mettre en lumière les étapes marquantes des débats politiques autour de l’immigration : d’une simple question économique à un enjeu central de la politique contemporaine.
S’appuyant à la fois sur des recherches originales dans les archives de l’administration française, sur l’étude des mises en oeuvre des politiques publiques depuis les années 2000 et à travers des entretiens oraux portant sur le vécu des immigrés, Angéline Escafré-Dublet dresse le portrait d’une variété d’acteurs historiques (politiques, fonctionnaires, travailleurs sociaux, militants, artistes, citoyens) qui ont contribué à façonner la compréhension des questions migratoires aujourd’hui.
 

Presentation « This book is an enquiry into the making of a ‘country of immigration’ and how a demographic statistic can become such a controversial issue that occupies the top of the political agenda. Angéline Escafré-Dublet starts from the overlooked fact that even though France became a country of immigration as early as the mid-19th century, because of its lagging population growth, it was only in the late-20th century that French people started to think of themselves as living in acountry of immigration. The book is about this change in identity and the ways in which the politics of migration - a much broader and globally connected process - came to redefine France in the second half of the 20th century. A Political History of Immigration in France is chronologically arranged in order to show the various stages the politics of immigration has been through : from a mere economic issue to a defining feature of contemporary politics. It draws on original research in the archives of the French administration, data on the implementation of public policies since the 2000s and oral interviews about the lived experience of immigrants. In so doing, Escafré-Dublet portrays a variety of historical actors, including politicians, administrative officials, social workers, activists, artists and citizens, who contributed to shaping the understanding of immigration issues today. »

 

Maîtresse de conférences en science politique à l’Université Lumière Lyon 2, depuis septembre 2014, Angéline Escafré-Dublet est chercheuse au laboratoire Triagnle et membre associée à l’Institut national d'études démographiques (INED) et directrice du département INTEGER de l’Institut Convergences Migrations. Elle a été chercheuse invitée au Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture de l’Université de Chicago (2005-2007). En 2008, elle a soutenue une thèse d’histoire contemporaine, à Sciences Po, sous la direction de Jean-François Sirinelli et Patrick Weil, intitulée : État, culture, immigration. La dimension culturelle des politiques françaises d’immigration (1958-1991).
