Mia and Coline ruin your movie: The Blind Side

In this episode of Learn With US, Mia and Coline illustrate the numerous connections between the 2009 movie The Blind Side—directed by John Lee Hancock and inspired by the life of NFL player Michael Oher—and the notion of White Saviourism, or the trope of the white person as the “saviour” of the oppressed. From the deep-rooted origins of the White Saviour Complex in American history to the consequences of such narratives, join us to analyse what seemed at first like an “anti-racist” movie.

White privilege, or how there are none so blind as those who will not see

In France, we have always approached racism through the only prism of the discriminated ones, whether in teaching, academic or medias sources. In contrast, Anglo-Saxon academia (mainly in the United States and the United-Kingdom) has highlighted the existence of a 'white privilege', which shifts the way in which the racial question is approached: to understand racism, we must first turn to those who, unconsciously or not, perpetuate it.
In this podcast, we will look at how the legacy of segregation is still being imposed on black people today. To make this a bit more concrete, we will use the example of housing, where there are huge disparities between certain neighborhoods. If all this seems a priori a bit indigestible, we also talk about films and series available on Netflix that deal with the issue in a very relevant way ! See you soon!
