Rhône-Alpes Laboratory of Historical Research

Axe(s) of research

On 1st January 2003, the Rhône-Alpes Laboratory of Historical Research (modern and contemporary) was created as a joint research unit at the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research).

At the same time, the following former joint research units were completely or partially integrated into this unit: 5035 (Texts and History of Christianity), 5049 (History of Art) and 5599 (Pierre Léon Centre), as well as the university teams HESOP (Pierre Mendès-France University - Grenoble 2), the Centre of urban history (École Normale Supérieure de Lettres et Sciences Humaines - Higher Education and Research Institution in Humanities) and the team specialised in seclusion, fringe and societies (Jean Moulin University - Lyon 3).

This joint research unit is the result of a contract between the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research), ENS-LSH and three universities (Grenoble 2, Lyon 2 and Lyon 3).

The central affiliation institute of the laboratory is the Lumière University (Lyon 2). The head office of the UMR is at the ISH (Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences): 14/16 avenue Berthelot. The director - Jean-Luc Pinol - teaches contemporary history at the Lumière University (Lyon 2).
The LARHRA comprises about 70 members organised in five teams. The PhD students at LARHRA are affiliated with doctoral colleges of the three universities with research lecturers depending on CNRS UMR 5190.

  • Companies and corporate activities
Industrialisation areas and protagonists
The performance of European companies
Major International Affairs
The regional economic infrastructure
The research carried out by the team is focused on the history of companies, entrepreneurs and employers' organisations, qualifications, training systems and relationships between science and technology in industrial societies.

  • History of Art
Artistic culture and the printing industry
Society images
Between standards and regulations
Broadcasting shapes and ideas is a major topic, in particular as regards printed books and engraving. Other research focus points - in particular the textile and silk industry, ordinary town construction and more recently society images - have been retained for the next quadrennial. Lastly, particular attention is paid to the use of new technologies through the elaboration of an image database and digital editing of image and movie catalogues.

  • Religions, societies and acculturation - RESEA
Closed spaces and enclosures
Contacts, acculturation, miscegenation
Cultural, political and religious models
Scientific projects have been redefined based on a twofold observation: among social, religious and cultural situations, there are also interpenetration aspects; the most relevant interpretations assume that work is carried out on the strategies developed based on models, the diffusion thereof and the effects of relevant broadcasting.

  • Mountain societies and territories
History of natural hazards
Backwardness and modernity
By focusing on mountains, the team wishes to be involved in this renewal process based on sharing knowledge, an international partnership (in particular with the Istituto di Storia delle Alpi - History Institute of the Alps in Lugano) and transdisciplinary practice.

  • Towns and urban societies
Urban order, disturbances and social control in modern and contemporary towns
Mobility and traffic: geographical and social mobility towards towns and in town centres. Urban planning and policies.
The team focuses on a social analysis of space, the rhythms of towns, living habits and social relations in urban areas. These focus topics make it possible to study the various types of material town planning and building of urban societies, in particular based on mobility and migration and a long-term study of compulsory or negotiated urban area control policies.
