Axe(s) of research

One specificity of the unit, the main University Transport Economics research unit in France, lies in the fact that its research is both academic and sector-based.

One specificity of the research team, the main University Transport Economics research unit in France, lies in the fact that its research is both academic and sector-based. Added to traditional scientific research team productions such as theoretical research, theses, articles etc., are contractual expertise activities; namely applied research, pattern building, and assessments contributing to the decision making policies of authorities. On a wider scale LET's work helps to answer economic and social questions inherent in the mobility of people and goods.

Thus, in a context where questions linked to the environment, social harmony, national and regional development, activity location, and the choice of new transport infrastructure overlap, LET analyses, simulates and assesses transport policies integrating the preoccupation of sustainable development.

Research mainly covers the transport sector (passengers and goods, urban as well as inter-urban, for all modes of transport; rail, road, air, river and maritime), with particular focus on:
  • analysis of long and medium-term mobility trends
  • the efficiency and acceptability of policies to be introduced (management of traffic - for personal vehicles, speed control, traffic limitation, parking ...)
  • the impact of new travel practices and new means of transport on the environment and quality of life
  • infrastructure financing and use (with the key question of the continuity of  financing)
  • spatial and social equity  (Right to transport,  pricing systems, urban tolls ...)
  • evaluation of transport policies and economic calculation of investment.

Whilst the economy remains the main focus of activity for LET, most of the work projects involved demand a multi-disciplinary approach, aimed at the totality of transportation system trends (economy, development, geography, sociology etc.)

Research is based on active projects and domains. Whilst active projects are aimed at organising and stimulating questioning, at a given time, around a key issue, domains involve in-depth research of a more permanent nature carried out in other areas.

Active research projects :  Activity localisation trends - Transport and environment - Experimental approaches to transport behaviour - Long-term simulation of durable mobility - Equity and acceptability of transport policies

Research fields : Techniques, communication and society - Goods transport - Transport and development - Air transport.
