Axe(s) of research

The works carried out at ICAR UMR are in line with the interactive approach of facts relating to language and speech, which focuses on the communicative vocation of linguistic systems. The main goal of the research is to theorise communicative interactions, from informal conversations to exchanges in institutional contexts. In particular, it aims at refining available conceptual instruments and extending theory to new types of interactions: argumentative interactions, interactions involving more than two participants, interactions in the media, didactic interactions, interactions in business contexts, service and health care relations, etc.

The types of interactions attested in our societies are extremely diverse, as are the approaches which may be used to study them. That is why in addition to a group of linguists, ICAR involves psychologists, ethnologists, specialists in nonverbal communication, and also - for one of the topics - specialists in hard sciences.
The works require the elaboration of audio or video selections of genuine data enabling the simultaneously study of communicative, vocal and gestural systems. ICAR mainly focuses on the constitution of its corpora and on the implementation of both thorough and easy to use transcription methods.
The analysis of such interactions is suitable for numerous applications.

The ICAR laboratory comprises four teams:

  • Team 1 Interactions : Forms, Practices and Situations (IFPS)
The team focuses on interdisciplinary topics (language sciences, psychology and cognitive sciences). Its main feature asserts itself through an original methodology regarding the interactive approach of linguistic facts and social situations: customary interactions, interactions at work, service interactions, therapeutic interactions, educational interactions, IT interactions and argumentative and explanatory interactions. It is involved in two international projects and two national projects.

  • Team 2 Learning, Discourse, Interactions, Linguistic, Scientific and Technical Knowledge (ADIS-lst)
The works carried out by this team are based on two topics.
The three aspects of didactic activities: knowledge, teaching and learning, as well as the relations between them.
Didactic systems and situations:
Types of teacher/student, student/student or expert/non-expert interaction: using TICE and alternate training.
Two aspects are tackled:
Scientific and technical training (refer to fields 1 and 3 of the guidelines of the INRP's five-year programme).
Language training.
French as a mother tongue or second language.
Foreign languages (including French as a foreign language).

  • Team 3 Linguistic Data and Corpora: Methodologies of Analysis and Modelling (DCL - MAM)
This team focuses on three main topics:
Production of written linguistic resources
Methodological reflection and elaboration of analysis tools
A textometric approach
Development - for Arabic - of software designed for specific applications
Linguistic description and theorizing
- motivational phonology of Semitic languages
- diachronic study of French, focused e.g. on syntax, semantics and grammaticalisation (Céline Guillot and Christiane Marchello-Nizia), and formal semantics (Jacques Jayez).

  • Team 4 Languages, Syntax, Semantics and Semiotics (LS 3)
RHEMA Research Group:
Syntax: Prepositions
Lexicology: Metaphors.
SEMEIA Research Group:
Main research topics in cooperation with the Pôle Image animée' (Centre of Animated Images) at the ISH (Humanities and Social Sciences Institute) and other topics of the UMR:
Multimedia, mediation, semiotics and interactions.
Reference, intersemioticity and interactions.
Multisemiotic representations of fiction dialogues.
