Axe(s) of research

The object of the GRAC (French Renaissance and Classical Age studies) is to analyse and publish French literature from the pre-Renaissance to the Classical Age period.

Attention is focused on publishing rare texts and lexicological and lexicographical projects, and analysing literary construction as well as the relationship between the main philosophical concepts. The object of these works is mainly to build up on-site and publish various types of philological and literary documents: critical editions (Droz, PUL, Champion, PUF, etc.), glossaries, literary or lexicographical analyses, concordance, contribution to enhancing the Frantext database, essays on the history of ideas.

The team's work includes research and input of texts, seminars on their relevant preparation and interpretation, inquiries with regard to archives, studies on lexical networks, critical studies on dictionaries from that period, elaboration of lexicons and specialised glossaries. The GRAC thus uses new means to continue its research; over the last twenty years, this research has lead to publishing fifteen critical editions, one review and numerous articles and works.

1. 16th and 17th century literary texts which are hard or even impossible to get hold of, or which were appallingly badly published.

2. Vocabulary used during the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century: literary, scientific and technical texts (texts which have not been studied by authors of dictionaries, or even unpublished texts).

3. History of ideas : humanism and anti-humanism, literary fertility of Augustinism, scepticism and cynicism.

4. Poetics : theatre and classical theories of representation; poetic art from the Lyon school (1530-1550).
