Axe(s) of research

Created in 1994, the object of this research team is to create one of the major centres for historical and archaeological research on Christian and Muslim worlds during the Middle Ages. It brings together archaeologists and historians who specialise in the medieval period - which  lasted from the 5th century to the 15th century - whose works are particularly focused on the Rhône-Alpes region, the South of France, Italy, Spain, Maghreb and the Near East. Research is carried out within the scope of a large network of international and interdisciplinary cooperation, and is focused on the numerous aspects of Mediterranean societies: land planning and development, technical knowledge and material culture, power systems, religion and communication.

Teams/subjects/fields

1. Land planning and development: the organisation of populating and land planning and development are subject to extensive archaeological studies focused on rural populating and country organisation in several Mediterranean regions (Calabria, Sabina, Sardinia) as well as urban environments (Morocco, Andalusia) and house architecture (Toledo).

2. Technical knowledge and material culture: the history of medieval societies is tackled from a technological point of view: transformation of raw materials and ore, balneology, hydraulic techniques, pottery. One research topic that is developing rapidly: the study of archaeological fabrics and history of dye, from the production of pigments to relevant implementation techniques.

3. Powers, trade and social control: powers and territorial, judicial and fiscal aspects of social control are subject to textual and archaeological analyses. They are focused on the following topics:
a) the transition between standard seigneury to territorial principality in the kingdom of Arles and Vienne further to the excavations carried out at the Albon site
b) the political staff through prosopographical studies on state officials and civil servants in Italy
c) the financial strategies and policies in Mediterranean towns and seigniorial levies and credit
d) the history of the Inquisition and its significance with regard to the development of criminal law procedures.

4. Religion, space and communication: research on mendicant friars on a European scale, in particular analysis of their long-lasting commitment towards mass communication practices and their particular sensitivity to issues linked with possession and use of material goods. They carry on indexing Jacques de Voragine's model sermons and analysing the relationships between friars and economic realities, within the scope of the study on mendicant orders conducted by the GDR Salvé research team (CNRS - National Organisation for Scientific Research).

Transversal programmes:

- Pragmatic written works and communication during the Middle Ages: within the scope of the interdisciplinary programme History of knowledge (ACI CNRS), this project links two corpuses of functional works from the end of the medieval period - that of model sermons and that of accounts concerning the jurisdictions of feudal lords. The object is to develop a joint method in order to analyse and enhance the value of these documentary corpuses using relevant computer tools.

- MIL.ORD: The object of this programme, conducted with the support of the Casa de Velázquez, is to federate research on military orders and to build up a bibliographic and prosopographical database. It also plans to create a critical dictionary of European military orders during the Middle Ages.
