Axe(s) of research

The joint research unit Education and Policies deals with issues concerning education and training by using mainly sociological, philosophical and anthropological approaches.

Its scientific work is characterised by diversification of auxiliary policy principles applicable to those involved, by decentralisation and progressive integration of Europe, by the appearance of new regulatory measures for the education system and the de-scholarisation of education, all in pronounced conjunction.

The project is aimed at studying way in which direction is found in a multi-referential universe, how activities are coordinated to define the public education system, formulate curricula, manage institutions and conditions of work. The project follows the creation of social networks, assuming that the players are basing their behaviour along the same principles on both micro and macro-social levels.

Research is focused mainly on the following:

- Public education policies of the State, national educational organisations and institutions as well as new regulatory modes at both local and European level, the effects of such new trends (for instance, on redefining the educational identity in Europe, or demand from users where new facilities are being planned or existing  facilities are being overhauled) following implementation of the programmes or reshaping of the institutions).

- Diverging political concepts which underlie the challenges to secular universalness at both national and local level, definition of public space, and community culture for schools, the development of arts and culture reflecting the development of educational and cultural systems, as well as disciplines aimed at raising awareness of architecture and space.

- Uncertainty of work, particularly teachers, in a multi-referential world

- Social transfer and use of knowledge and NTIC.

This work is carried out in conjunction with that of foreign researchers.

Teams/Subjects/Fields

  • Axis 1: Regrouping of territories and regulatory modes for public action in the field of education. A European perspective (directed by: Jean-Louis Derouet).
Study of public education policies (State, national organisations and institutions), of tension between different regulatory modes due to decentralisation and European standards, of deregulation of the educational system through implementation of European norms, of educational projects as implemented over a lifetime, and of redefinition of the educational identity in Europe.

  • Axis 2: Policies based on knowledge and cultural practices: revival of the relationship between school and culture, as well as that between vernacular and curricular knowledge.
This axis focuses on redefining the frontiers between knowledge acquired at school and that stemming from other social sources, as well as challenges for republican universalness posed by social pluralism .

- School culture and other cultures: universalness to the test (directed by Jacqueline Gautherin). Study, on a national and local level, of the challenges facing secular universalness and the creation of a community culture.

- Artistic and cultural activities between schools and cultural institutions (directed by Alain Kerlan): artistic and cultural activities at secondary school, visiting artists in schools, the place of art in the training of engineers and managers, educational policies and practice in cultural institutions.

- Architecture and education (directed by Marie-Claude Derouet-Besson): decentralisation and users' demand, appreciation of architecture and space in school curricula, definition of players' qualifications.

  • Axis 3: An anthropology of oriented action: the work of players in education (directed by Jean-Louis Derpouet).
A study of the effects of the evaluation of the education system on the work of education managers, teachers and pupils as well as the uncertainties of work in educational, ethnographic aspects of the players' reasoning and tensions in a social environment determined by multiple norms.
  • Transversal axis:  The transfer of knowledge between research, training and practices.
- references to psychology and sociology in studying the players in education (directed by François Baluteau and André Robert), analysis of the circulation of knowledge, of it receipt, of the creation of a common culture in UFM as well as their implementation through teaching practices.
- The use of NTIC (directed by François Baluteau and Hélène Godinet), a study of a conception of links and hyper-textual resources in the creation of a digital campus and its use by students.
