Specialised in the arts, literature, languages, human and social sciences, law, economics and management, Université Lumière Lyon 2 is France’s second-ranking centre of university research. The university develops its research policy according to three priorities:
  1. Innovation through interfaces between disciplines;
  2. International visibility of scientific production;
  3. The promotion of socially-aware research through partnerships with the business and cultural worlds, local authorities, non-profit organisations, public institutions and the media.

Lyon 2 is renowned for the wide range of disciplines it offers, including modern and classical literature, linguistics and living languages, music and musicology, performing and visual arts, economics and management sciences, history and pre-history, archaeology, physical and human geography, sociology, anthropology, social and clinical psychology, education sciences, public and private law and political science. Within this range of disciplines, there is a strong focus on research into the use and development of modern technology, in conjunction with experimental sciences, engineering and healthcare professions: cognitive sciences, information and communication sciences and technologies, data mining and analysis, business intelligence, and modelling and optimisation in the service of industrial engineering.

In conjunction with experimental, natural and health sciences, the university is developing its research policy for the 2015-2020 five-year contract along four main lines, which are at the heart of 21st-century societal and scientific challenges:
  1. Healthcare and society: inter-disciplinary approach to healthcare and social sciences;
  2. Development, environment and sustainability;
  3. Digitisation, simulation and modelling of complexity;
  4. Images, texts, speeches, creation and multimedia publishing.

In partnership with high-level research laboratories, Université Lumière Lyon 2 coordinates several interdisciplinary and structural projects: MILC (Maison internationale des langues et des cultures – International centre for language and culture), ISERL (Institut supérieur d’études des religions et de la laïcité – Advanced institute for the study of religion and secularism), and a platform for mental health research with Le Vinatier hospital. It is also a driving force in projects selected as part of Investissements d’Avenir (Investments for the Future): LABEX (LABoratoires d’Excellence – LABoratories of EXcellence), ASLAN (language sciences), IMU (Intelligence des mondes urbains – Intelligence in urban environments), COMOD (history of ideas and modernity), CORTEX (the brain, neuroscience and cognition), as well as in structural equipment projects and platforms for human and social sciences and their interface with the exact sciences and biosciences

The laboratories are research and teaching-through-research centres that bring together teacher-researchers, researchers and doctoral students. Fundamental or applied research, which is freely developed by teams of researchers, is conducted in the laboratories. This research is financed by calls for proposals put forward by funding agencies both outside of and within the university. Research as a whole is coordinated through a scientific project approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR).

The laboratories are structured according to either disciplinary fields, on the one hand, or targeted research topics, cultural areas or socio-economic areas on the other. The university supports these research units through the means it makes available to them (premises, equipment, utilities, project support and career guidance) and the staff it allocates to them.

Sometimes contractually tied to other scientific and technological public establishments (UMRs: Unités Mixtes de Recherche – mixed research units), and sometimes laboratories financed through the university (EAs: Equipes d’Accueil – welcome teams), Université Lumière Lyon 2’s research units have, for the most part, developed a policy of partnership with other institutions: Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne, Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, Ecole Normale Supérieur de Lyon, Institut Français de l’Education, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, Institut National des Sciences Appliquées, Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l’Etat, Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne, Ecole Supérieur du Professorat et de l’Education, and Ecole Nationale Supérieur d’Architecture de Lyon. These laboratories sometimes group together in research federations that extend beyond the scope of the Lyon-Saint-Etienne site.
