The city of Lyon boasts an extraordinary historical and cultural heritage. In 1998, UNESCO included the historic city of Lyons into its World Heritage List.

The city is part of UNESCO's World Heritage
For many years, the city has been engaged in the preservation and promotion of its heritage. Thanks to its riches, the city of Lyon has joined other similar cities of Europe, such as Venice, Prague or St Petersburg.

Capital of the Gauls under the Roman Empire, a great merchant and cultural centre during the Renaissance, an important industrial centre of the 19th century; the city of Lyon has evolved with history, enriching itself under various influences. Today, the city's ancient quarters have been restored respecting the historical periods and techniques of the original builders. The variety of Lyon architectural heritage is an important asset: the Renaissance quarter of Old Lyon, the Fourvière Hill and its basilica and its Gallo-Roman park, the slopes of the Croix Rousse marked by the history of the silk industry and so on.
In more recent times, the city called upon the world's greatest architects to design new areas within the city such as the International City and Gerland. Situated at the meeting place of Rhône and Saône rivers, the Confluence is currently at the heart of a major development project.
