Axe(s) of research
Created in 1993 by a group of researchers from Lyon universities and the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the Institute of East Asian Studies (IAO) aims at developing research on social sciences in China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam. Its object is to assert itself as a major centre for research on contemporary Eastern Asia. Its goals are as follows:
1. Gathering researchers and research lecturers from various sectors within a permanent structure dedicated to exchanges and discussion.
2. Fundamental reflection on the economic and social developments, policies and history of Eastern Asia and its relationships with the contemporary world.
3. Training students for research.
4. Meeting expert report requirements of administrations, companies, territorial authorities and other national, European and international institutions.
5. Developing documentary resource centres specialised in East Asian countries.
The Institute of East Asian Studies takes part in training courses introducing research and develops specialised teaching courses on contemporary Asia and the various faculties of Lyon 2 University. Since 1994, the IAO has been in charge of the DESS Affaires Asiatiques' (postgraduate diploma in Asian Affairs) at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques' (Institute for Studies on Politics and International Relations) in Lyon, as well as the university degree on the contemporary Far East at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques' (Institute for Studies on Politics and International Relations) in Lyon. It is also project manager for the future Master's degree in political sciences specialised in Asia.
