Axe(s) of research
Created in 1996, GATE is a research institute for Applied Economics. Indeed, once a theoretical framework has been established, questions are tackled in the following fields: labour economy and human resources, industrial organisation and monetary and finance economics. The applied' aspect of our research will entail repercussions for political economy. For this reason, intensive use is made of methods of refutation such as econometrics and developing experimental economics.
The laboratory has an experimental economics room equipped with 30 network computers, thus allowing for a significant variety of experimental games. The IT engineers at GATE have designed communication software (REGATE) and an Internet browser (NESTOR). In July 2002, the SHS (Social & Human Sciences) Department of the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) awarded the Technological Platform for Experimentation in Social Sciences' accreditation to NETEX - French NETwork of EXperimental labs -, a research network comprising five French, CNRS-recognised economic research laboratories, for which GATE is the national coordinator.
GATE publishes a series of Working Papers and organises weekly research seminars as well as a fortnightly external seminar. It is also responsible for the organisation of several events: T2M 2005 (Theory and Methods in Microeconomics); Workshop on Leadership and Social Interaction and RH-FIDEXPE' Meeting in 2003; AFSE conference days in 2002; international conference days on Monetary and Banking Economics in 2002.
GATE's research policy is also focused on sending large amounts of PhD students to work in research laboratories in North America and Western Europe. Thus, ten PhD students every year carry out part of their doctoral work in laboratories abroad.

Partnership
GATE is a member of the following research groups:
Spatial Aspects and Economic Phenomena (ASPE)
Monetary and Financial Economy
Research Federation on Organisations and relevant Management (FROG)
Theory and Methods of Macroeconomics (T2M)
GATE develops its international relations through research and cooperation and by welcoming foreign teachers and PhD students from the following countries: Germany (Erfurt University; Humboldt-University, Berlin; Max Planck Gesellschaft MPG, Jena), Canada (Montreal University; HEC' school for management and business studies, Montreal; Laval University, Quebec), Denmark (Aarhus Business School; University of Copenhagen), Spain (Independent University of Barcelona UAB; Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona; Malaga University), United States (Utah State University; Emory Uni), Great Britain (University of Essex), Italy (Naples University Federico II'), Switzerland (Saint Gall University).
A team from GATE is in charge of an application for an integrated project within the scope of the 6th framework programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration activities: Human Resources - FIeld Data and EXPEriments (HR-FIDEXPE). This project gathers about a hundred researchers from 19 institutions in 13 different countries. It combines micro-econometricians and experimentalists around the following topics: incentives, careers, satisfaction at work, and ageing of the labour force.
Each year, GATE welcomes and exchanges four to six visiting tutors for missions lasting at least one month. It also takes part in executive committees of international conferences such as EALE (European Association of Labour Economists) and JMA's (Applied Microeconomics Days).
Several researchers from GATE are associated with the IZA Institute in Bonn for the study of labour).
