1. Who can be an exchange student at Lyon 2?


To do an exchange* in the university Lumière Lyon 2, you have to:
  • Be registered in a university that has an agreement with Lyon 2. If you are not sure about it, as the international office of your home university*.
  • Be selected by your home university* to study at Lyon 2. Without the agreement of your home university* you will not be allowed to come in Lyon 2 as an exchange student.

 

If you wish to come to Lyon 2 to graduate there, please read the information for international degree-seeking students.



2. Why come to the university Lumière Lyon 2?

The university Lumière Lyon 2 offers you a wide variety of good quality courses. During your stay, you will receive the assistance of the International Office (Direction des Relations Internationales = DRI). We will help you with administrative matters and will do our best in order for you to enjoy your stay in Lyon 2. We will see that the exchange students get a friendly welcome and suggest cultural activities.

Been an exchange student in Lyon 2 you will leave in the country that attracks the most tourists each year, in the city that hosts the light festival, the capital of French gastronomy, a UNESCO World Heritage. In Lyon you will enjoy a lot of cultural events.

 

It will be an excellent occasion to discover the French culture and improve you French while pursuing your academic career.

3. When to come?


You can come in the university Lumière Lyon 2 for:

  • The first semester (from the beginning of September until the middle of January)
  • The second semester (from the middle of January until the end of June)
  • The whole academic year (from the beginning of September until the end of June)
  • A civil year (from January until the next January) only if your home university* agrees with it (for the universities in the South Hemisphere)

4. How to apply?


Before you start an application, please make sure that you have the right to come as an exchange student and that the dates of your stay in Lyon 2 will fit with the academic calendar of your home university*.

Steps to apply in the university Lumière Lyon 2 as an exchange student:

 

1) Fill in the online application form which is available here.


You have to create a personal account first. You can then start to fill in your online application, you can save it and continue later if you want.

 

When you have completed the whole application form, make sure there is no mistake and validate the form. Then you have to print the pdf document created and have it signed by your coordinator.

 

2) Send to the postal address:

  • The pdf document signed by your coordinator.
  • the learning agreement* filled in and signed by your coordinator (an example is available here [PDF - 28 Ko])
  • a photocopy of your ID document (ID card or passport)
  • a photocopy of the European Health Insurance Card if you are European.
  • the SE401Q106 form from the RAMQ if you come from a Quebecoise university

 

IMPORTANT : We have to receive all those documents by:

  • May 31st if you want to come in September
  • October 15th if you want to come in January

Keep a copy of all those documents with you. 

 

If you want French language courses, please read the information about:  

  • the PRUNE (Pre-semester Intensive course) is a course not free before the semester starts.
  • the SLM (Soutien Linguistique et Méthodologique) is a free language course during the semester.

 

3) Wait, we will answer you.       

 

We will send you an e-mail to inform you whether you are accepted or not:

  • before June 30th if you apply to come in September
  • before November 15th if you apply to come in January. 

Before those dates, please do not call or send e-mails to know about your application.

If by the above mention dates you have not received an answer from us, please send an e-mail to incoming@univ-lyon2.fr with all the scanned documents.

5. Which courses to choose?

 

If you are an exchange student in the university Lumière Lyon 2, you can choose nearly all courses offered, in any department and of any level. You do not have to take all the courses from a diploma or an unite d'enseignement*(block of courses). You will find a link to the list of courses per subject at the end of this chapter. Unfortunately it is rare to find a description of the courses. You have to make a first choice of courses without coming to France. You will be able to change your learning agreement* once you will be in Lyon and have more details about the courses.

Attention, your study programme should always be approved by your home university*.

Attention, there is a very limited number of courses given in English and the teachers do not translate in English for the exchange students. You have to be able to follow courses in French.

 

You can also attend :

 

Attention, exchange students can usually not attend the following courses:

  • the courses from the « Diplômes d'Universite » (DU)
  • the courses from the « Masters 2 » (fifth year)
  • the « Options professionnalisantes » (professional options) from the Licence (undergraduate level)
  • the courses from the « Licences professionnelles »  (LP)
  • Some tutorials or workshops  

 

Attention, the courses taught from September to January are different from the ones taught from September to June.

Semestres

For each course, you pass the exam if you obtain at least 10 out of 20 (minimum 0 maximum 20). The university Lumière Lyon 2 gives you:
  • 5 ECTS credits for each 21 hour course you pass
  • 10 ECTS credits for each 31hour or 42 hour course you pass

Except for the two French language courses:

  • the PRUNE (4 ECTS credits in Septembre, no credit in January)

6. How much money you will need?

 

Your budget will depend a lot on you accommodation and lifestyle. Do not forget that you can obtain discounts in many places (transports, cultural events ...) with your student card. Keep it with you!

 

Here are some examples to help you estimate the cost of your stay:

 

Housing

  • 1 room or studio in the public residence: between 200€ and 400€ per month. We will not be able to provide a room or studio in the public residence to all the students who ask one.
  • 1 room in a flat sharing or in a private residence: between 400€ and 650€ per month + one month of administrative cost.
  • 1 night in a youth hostel: between 22€ and 36€ per night per person
  • 1 night in a hotel: from 40€ per night per person


Insurances

  • Health Insurance (Sécurité sociale) : about 210€/stay. This insurance is mandatory for all the students who do not have either the European Health Insurance Card (european students) or the the SE401Q106 form from the RAMQ (students coming from a Canadian universiyt). 

 

  • Liability (responsabilité civile).this insurance is mandatory. you can buy it before coming to France, or wait until you arrive. If you buy it in France, it will cost you about 20€ per year. 
  • Housung Insurance. This insurance is mandatory. You have to buy it in France once you have found an accommodation. Its cost depends on the caracteristics of your housing (size, location, rent, valuables,...). It costs between 30€ and 70€ per year.
  • The "mutuelle". This insurance is not mandatory but we strongly advise you to take one. It is an health insurance which allows you to have better reimbursement of your health expanses.



Transports

  • 1 round trip Lyon-Paris-Lyon by train (sncf) : from 40€ to 120€ (cheaper if you have the « carte 12-25 » discount card and if you buy the tickets in advance)
  • vélov' (bicycle to rent): unlimited access for 15€ per year if you hold a pass for the public transportation


Food

  • 1 full meal in the university restaurant: 3€10
  • 1 sandwich in the university cafeteria : from 1€40 to 2€30
  • 1 sandwich in the city : from 4€00 to 6€00
  • 1 baguette (bread): 1€00
  • 1 diner in a restaurant: from 20€00


Culture / leisure

  • 1 daily national newspaper, such as « Le Monde »: 1€50
  • 1 paperback: around 10€00
  • 1 ticket in a movie theatre: from 5€70 to 10€20
  • 1 ticket in a theatre: from 9€00 to 25€00
  • 1 entry in a club: around 15€

7. How to obtain a visa?

 

If you are a national from the European Union, Island, Liechtenstein, Norway or Sweden, you do not need a visa to study in France.

 

If you are a national from an other country, you have to obtain a long-stay study visa to study in France. This visa is mandatory and can not be obtained once you are in France. You have to obtain it before coming.

 

To obtain a visa, you have to:

 

  • Make an application on the Campus France website if you are a national from one of the following countries: Algeria, Argentina, Benin, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Congo, Korea, Ivory Coast, United Stated of America, Gabon, Guinea, India, Japan, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mauritius, Mexico, Russia, Senegal, Syria, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Vietnam. The address of the campus France website is: www.yourcountry.campusfrance.org you have to replace yourcountry by the name of your country. For example if you are a national from Chile, you will go to: www.chili.campusfrance.org

OR

 


Attention: if you are a resident of a European Union country but not a national from a European union country, you will have to obtain a visa to study in France.


8. How to find an accommodation in Lyon?

 

It has become difficult to find an accommodation in Lyon. You have to start looking for one as soon as your receive the acceptance e-mail from the université Lumière Lyon 2. 

 

There are several kinds of accommodation.

 

The rooms and studios in the public university residences

These are rooms and studios with not much comfort, outside of the city centre.

The rent for a room varies between 180€ and 240€ per month. The rent for a studio is around 340€ per month. More details about the public university residences are available on the document « Info logement - résidence universitaire publique » [PDF - 12 Ko] (in French).

You can ask for a room or a studio in the public residence when you apply online to be an exchange student in Lyon 2.

ATTENTION: The université Lumière Lyon 2 has a limited number of rooms and studios in the public university residence. We can not accommodate all students who ask it.

 

The rooms and studios in the private university residences

There are several private university residences in Lyon with rooms and studios available. The rent is usually between 400€ and 650€ per month and there are some administrative fees and a caution*.

Host family accommodations

This is a special type of room. The landlord (a person or a family) is living in the apartment (or the house) and is renting a room. You have to agree on the rights and duties of the landlord and the tenant. Some landlords are willing to share breakfast and even sometimes diner.

The rent is usually between 350€ and 550€.

Some advertisement of host family accommodations (chambre chez l'habitant in French) can be found on the website of the CROUS. We will also send other offers by e-mail to the students accepted as exchange students in the université Lumière Lyon 2.

 

Flat sharing, individual rooms and studios

These are rooms or studios to be rented directly from the landlord or from an estate agency.

The rent is usually between 350€ and 600€.

Good to know

You can use the Glossary to better understand the words such as bail*, chauffage individuel*, chauffage collectif*, charges locatives*, caution solidaire*... used in the accommodation advertisements.

Do not hesitate to use the tool « routes » on the website of the public transportation of Lyon. This will allow you to know the time you will need to go from an accommodation to each campus of the université Lyon 2.  

When you arrive in Lyon, if you have not found an accommodation yet, we will provide you with a computer, internet access and a telephone at the International Office.

 

A proof of housing insurances will be required by the landlord. The student insurances (SMERRA, LMDE) and the banks offer this insurance. It usually costs between 30€ and 60€. 

 

ATTENTION : Never take or leave an accommodation without signing an état des lieux* (inventory and statement of state of repair). Be really careful when you make this document.  

 

When you arrive in Lyon, if you have not found an accommodation yet, do not forget to book a temporary accommodation. A list of the main temporary accommodation is available on the document « Info logement - hébergement temporaire » [PDF - 9 Ko] (in French).

10. Glossary



Bail
 : a bail is a contract made between the landlord (or his representative) and the  tenant. It describes the flat or room and gives the rights and duties of the landlord and the tenant. You have to sign this contract before moving into the flat. You also have to do a état des lieux* before moving in. If you share the flat with other tenants, be sure to know if each tenant has his own contract or if there is one contract for all the tenants with a caution solidaire*.


Bailleur : The person that does the bail* and sign it with the tenant.


Caution : It is the deposit you give to the landlord when you move in a flat. It is usually one month of rent. It is given back to you when you leave if you always paid the rent on time and did not damage the flat.

Caution solidaire : It is a caution* shared between the tenant when there are several tenants. If you share a flat and you have a caution solidaire, the deposit, the rent and the charges locatives have to be shared by the tenants. If one of the tenants can not pay, the other tenants are indebted for it.

Charges locatives : It is all the service charges. They are divided between all the tenants in a building.

Chauffage collectif : The price of the heating used in all the building is divided between all the tenants. You will have to pay the heating with the rent.

Chauffage individuel : you pay only the heating you use. When you move in, you have to contact the gaz and/or electricity supplier: Gaz de France (GDF) and/or Électricité de France (EDF). You have to terminate the contract you have with those suppliers when you leave. 


Colocation : Flat-sharing. You share the same flat with other people, called the colocataires. Check the conditions on your bail*: There is either one bail per tenant, or one bail for all the tenants (and a caution solidaire*).

Contrat pédagogique : (do not confuse with the learning agreement*) it the list of courses that you take once you are in Lyon 2. This list in on a colourful paper given to you by the DRI* at the beginning of each semester. It will bear the title of each course you take and the signature of each teacher.

Coordinateur : Coordinator. Being an exchange student, you will have several coordinators. A coordinator is a person, usually a teacher, who helps you to choose the courses. You have a coordinator in you home university* and one in the university Lumière Lyon 2.

Etat des lieux 
: It is a document signed by the landlord (or his representative) and the tenant. It describes precisely the flat conditions, room by room. One is done when the new tenant moves in, it is état des lieux d'entrée. It is important to report clearly everything on that document (floors conditions, roofs conditions, humidity, tabs, mailbox, heating, equipments...). If you see a new defect just after moving in, send a lettre en recommandé avec accusé de réception (= registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt) to the bailleur*. You have 1 days to point out a defect. Before moving out, do not forget to do the état des lieux de sortie, to check that nothing was broken or damaged. If there are some damages, the landlord will use all or part of the caution* to repair. If there is no damage, the landlord will give you the deposit back.

Exchange : A student doing an exchange is a student registered in his home university* and in a host university* but who will graduate from his home university* only. In this case the student pays the registrations fees only to his home university*, but will attend courses in the host university* during one semester or one academic year. To participate in an exchange, there has to be an agreement signed between the home university* and the host university*.

Garant : It is a person who accept to pay your rent if you have a problem and can not pay it on time. The landlords or their representatives often ask to provide a garant. The garant should live in the European Union and should be able to prove that he earns at least three times the rent per month. Some landlords might accept to you a flat without a garant if you pay several months of rent in advance when you move in.

Home University: the foreign (not French) univeristy in which you are registered and from which you will graduate.


Host University: It is the Université Lumière Lyon 2.


Learning agreement : It is the list of courses that you wish to take when you will be in Lyon 2. You do the learning agreement and send it with your application before coming in Lyon. If you are accepted in Lyon 2 we will sign the learning agreement and give it back to you when you arrive in Lyon.

Locataire :Tenant. It is a person leaving in a flat but who does not own the flat.

Régie : It is a company which does not own flats but which manages them, finding tenants, signing contracts, fixing any damage, collecting the rents and service charges...

Taxe d'habitation : Housing tax. Any person living in an independent flat has to pay the taxe d'habitation. It depends on the rent and the income of the tenant. This tax is paid at the end of the year, for the flat you live in on the first of January (in the end of 2012 you will pay the taxe d'habitation for the flat you lived in on January 1st, 2011).

The taxe d'habitation usually equals one month of rent, but it depends on the flat, the neighbourhood...

Unité d'enseignement (U.E.): several courses are put together. Those U.E. are often « majeur », « complément de majeur » or « UE transversale ».  The exchange students do not have to follow or the courses of one U.E.
